If current members of the Republican party had been members of the Sons of Liberty back in 1773 and if on their way to Boston Harbor to dump the tea, they had run across a couple of British soldiers on patrol who had said "Hey! You! Go back home!" they would have meekly said, "Yessir, thank you sir" and gone home, tucked themselves into bed and slept through the revolution.
There are a lot of issues surrounding the whole Republican April 15th Tea Party: was it a grassroots movement, was it well-planned, was it even a good idea...I don't really care. I just wanted to see a good protest. I wanted to see a statement. The ideology behind the statement is beside the point. But, you know, liberals put on pretty good shows with their protests, so I was looking forward to what the conservatives could do...and it sucked! Who fails in protesting? Sheesh, so a truck came from Alabama completely loaded up with tea bags all ready to dump in front of the Treasury Department. But, Secret Service said they couldn't park in front of the building to dump the tea bags. So, the truck drove around looking for a place to dump the million or so tea bags, gave up, and dumped them, according to the Washington Post, on the 10th floor of a conservative think tank. *slow clapping* The craziest thing that happened was that someone managed to get a box of tea onto the White House lawn. And then conservatives got moved to some mud pit to protest, chanted a few things and went home. Really? You think that really got through to President Obama? Would some kind liberal please take pity and teach the conservatives how to organize a protest?
There is no way that a liberal protest would have failed like this. They would have linked arms to form a human wall to prevent the cops from stopping the truck. And while the cops beat through the human wall, the truck would have dumped the tea, and people would have grabbed the bags and started throwing them all over the place. Hundreds would have been arrested, 50 injured, tea would have been everywhere, and the point would have been made. The classic conservative quote for today was from some guy who said, "We like the police. We do what they say." C'mon! How about a little civil disobedience? You don't have to punch the cops. But, if you're trying to make a statement, at least be a little disobedient, especially when you're trying to recreate 1773.
So, now the nation is faced with an awful political predicament. One party has control of everything, and the other party doesn't know how to fight the power (hard to fight the power when too many of your "leaders" make $20 million a year on the radio). So much for a lively democracy.
