So, the news stations are all telling me definitively that Ben Cardin has defeated Michael Steele and Martin O'Malley has defeated Bob Ehrlich. In fact, they said, "Now, we're taking you to Michael Steele who will be talking abouthis loss." Yet, on-line at 11:04 PM, Michael Steele is leading by 11,000 votes and Bob Ehrlich is leading by 22,000 votes. Yet, both Fox News and CNN are reporting that these are locks for Democrats. Only 35% of the precincts have reported...how do they know what's in those remaining 65%? I guess maybe because some of the more rural precincts have 100% in. Anyway, you can bet your bum that I'm going to stay up late, because if I went to bed now, I might be surprised in the morning to find out that it was a close race.
Katie Couric is a terrible anchor. Wow, she stinks. I sure miss Peter Jennings. That Canuck sure covered American elections well.
So, everything about Maryland politics is the opposite of Utah politics. The mud-slinging is fierce, you seem campaign ads on TV constantly, and I mean constantly. As in, back to back to back. Both parties have just dumped money on the stupidest ads I've ever seen. Whoever is running the Republican Senate Committee on Advertisements should be fired for the awful ads he's come up with. The whole "Jim Webb, right for '06....1806!" leaves me with my mouth agape every time I see it. It's like a whole other country. So, I turn up to vote today at Eleanor Roosevelt High School and there is a huuuge Martin O'Malley bus outside the school, parked directly in front of the entrance to the polls with Mr. O'Malley and cast and crew hanging outside "talking" to people as they entered. I had to make my way through the group to even get to the polls, thinking to myself, "If I was a timid, small little man, I might feel intimdated if someone asked me my political preference and I might turn away and not vote today...but I'm a bitter, mean little man and I'll be deviled if this Irishmen is gonna stop this English Scotsman from voting against him" so I voted. I couldn't help but wonder why they allow this. There should be no one outside the polling place making it difficult to vote or trying to pressure you one way or another. It's disgusting. The same goes for the PAC that sets up shop outside the MVA and the Post Office here that says that George Bush is mentally deficient. I never realized how tastless politics could be until I got here.
In other political news, (Ehrlich is now up 50,000 votes...what's the deal?) AWESOME!!! So everyone's been calling the races based on exit polling!!! The O'Malley camp said that O'Malley was going to give a victory speech at 11:00 based on EXIT POLLING!! They just told the news guy here, "Well, we're going to wait to actually look at the real polls" Morons, you're candidate is down 50,000. Maybe you should have always checked the real polls. This is great. The media sucks at prognosticating (I hope). Anywho, so everyone in class today made the assumption that I'm a Democrat seeing how everyone else is a raving liberal in my school (Uh oh, the gap is closing...Baltimore City must be coming in). So, during the break, a couple people came in and were shocked that the marriage amendment in Virginia was going to pass. But they were calling it the gay marriage amendment and another person in the class thought that they meant that Gay marriage was going to be legalized. So she was angry that VA was going to pass it, while the other people ere angry because it wasn't going to pass. They all thought they were in agreement, until about 5 minutes later they realized that were on opposite sides. Conversation ceased immediately. It was awesome. Raw emotion from both sides thinking that everyone else was in agreement with them.
Well, let's see how this plays out. I might post later.
