Final college football post for a while
I went to the Las Vegas Bowl again this year and it was incredibly satisfying. In describing the game, some ESPN analyst said that sometimes speed, size, and strength doesn't beat execution as evidenced by the BYU-Oregon game. I agree on the speed. Oregon was faster. As for size, I was using mega-powerful binoculars and the BYU players were much larger than the Oregon players who all had matchstick legs. BYU was bigger and stronger, which is why they were able to dominate the line of scrimmage, especially on defense. Oregon's offensive line offered little protection and their best plays were QB scrambles. In contrast, John Beck was sacked once late in the third quarter and had plenty of time to throw during the rest of the game. Just because Oregon is Pac-10 and BYU is MWC doesn't mean that the stereotypes of BCS and non-BCS apply. BYU was a better, stronger team. And yes, BYU's execution was spot-on. Except for the first quarter. If Beck had come out on target, this game would have been uglier. Due to Beck's sterling bowl performance, he moves into number 3 on my all-time BYU Quarterbacks that I Have Seen list. You talk about a quarterback that has complete control of the situation, it's Beck. He knows where every receiver should be, how long he needs to wait for each one to get open and where each pass rusher is and how long before he'll get drilled. I've watched a number of quarterbacks this year (never saw Brennan of Hawaii though) and only Booty could rival Beck. I would say Troy Smith who looked good all year, but he totally had mental breakdown against Florida (probably because Ted Ginn was out, the guy who you could rely on catching a 50+ yard TD every game...he should have won the Heisman). I feel sorry for the team that drafts Brady Quinn #1. The sign of a good quarterback is when he gets the ball to semi-decent receives not when he has a 6-6 receiver he can always throw to. Anyone can throw to a Calvin Johnson, Dwayne Jarrett of Jeff Szmarjdia.
