Final Thoughts on the BSU-OU game
Much has been made about the BSU-OU game in the media, most of it using the comparison of David and Goliath and how the little team stood up and upset the big bad football machine. Of all the stories I've read, I have yet to read one that really gives Boise State the real respect it deserves. Of course people are playing up the brilliant offensive manouvers at the end of the game and they were awesome. But here's the deal. Before the game, no one really gave Boise State a chance in winning UNLESS they played an absolutely perfect game. This is what we see all the time in college football or basketball. The underdog has to have zero turnovers, solid punting, defense that doesn't break down and a couple of other flukey things to pull off the win, and the favorite team has to make a couple of bonehead plays to boot. This game was not a perfect game by Boise State. In fact, they made numerous mistakes that should have killed their chances. The three turnovers in the second half were all killers: the first was a fumble on the punt when BSU was up 28-10 and looking good. OU had to drive ten yards to score. Next was the Ian Johnson fumble in OU territory, killing a BSU drive. Finally, the Zabransky INT returned for a touchdown. All of these mistakes and conservative playcalling should have lead to Boise's undoing. Instead, they managed to pull out the win. What does this say about the Boise team? To me, it tells of their legitimacy. In a game where turnovers and dumb plays are equally divided between teams, Davids should be vanquished with ease. Instead Boise wins. Stop playing the David and Goliath card because Boise is better than OU. If Boise had played the perfect game they would have beaten OU by three scores. Oh, and it should be noted that the BSU offensive and defensive line played as well if not better than OU and looked just as fast. So much for the "not as athletic" card.
