Enough is enough. It's time to start calling out bands for mimicry. At least lets have it out in the open. It's one thing for bands to copy a certain sound, but to copy bits and pieces of songs...it's a travashamockery! Here are two offenders that I have caught in the last week...
Main Offender #1: Sufjan Stevens. The offending song: Part II of Come on Feel the Illinoise. The violated artist: The Cure. The violated song: Close to Me. The stolen segment: The horn section. Maybe Sufjan forgot or maybe Sufjan didn't expect the new generation of indie fans to know their Cure and figured that he just had so many great songs without good arrangements so what's a little plagarism between generations?
Main Offender #2: The Killers. The offending song: Uncle Jonny. The violated artist: REM. The violated song: The Finest Worksong. The offending section: The beginning. I half expected Michael Stipe's voice to launch out of the speakers after the guitar intro.
So, these might not be note for note rip-offs. But still...come on, a little ingenuity, please. Finally, it sounds like the Decemberists are channeling their inner Talking Heads on The Perfect Crime. I can hear David Byrne singing this in an oversized suit.
Later, I'll post all the different songs that sound exactly like the Stone Roses "She's a Waterfall". There are about 5.
