There must be some misunderstanding
After carefully prepping Dave all day that Mom and Caleb were going to be leaving on an airplane and that we were going to drop them off at the airport, Dave missed the airport because he zonked on the car ride up and ended up sleeping all the way until we were ten minutes from the house on the return journey. When we pulled into the parking lot of the complex, I think he realized that this was not the airport and some promises had been broken. I explained him to him that he had been asleep and that mom and Caleb were on an airplane now. It turns out that Dave hadn't quite caught on to the fact that he himself was not going to be going on the airplane. The next 45 minutes featured continuous sobbings punctuated by "I want to go on the airplane!" and "I want to put my boots on and go to the airport" and "I want to go to Las Vegas!" Christina must have taught him about this place called Las Vegas because I had never heard him say it before in his life. The only things that could quiet him down were animal crackers and Madagascar. After another hour, he was finally of sound enough mind to broach the subject again wherein I explained to him again that Mom and Caleb were on an airplane and that he could talk to her tomorrow on the phone. And then we looked at a picture of an airplane. I think he gets it now. What a disappointment to think that you're going on an airplane and then wake up to find that you missed your opportunity because you were sleeping.
