Harry Reid and BYU

Here's a thought for lunchtime.

The Deseret News reported that only 4,000 people attended the forum where Harry Reid spoke. My brother challenged that number. If the Deseret News is right, what are we to think about the lack of interest in the Senate Majority Leader? As has been mentioned many times, Sen. Reid is the highest ranking Mormon ever in politics. Adding to this, he's an active Mormon. One would think that there would be great interest among Mormons and BYU social science majors in particular. I can bet you 50 Maryland blue crabcakes that if Mitt Romney was the speaker at a forum the place would be packed like sardines and spontaneous Our Man Mitt chants would break out during the speech.

This in no way indicates what I think about Harry Reid or Mitt Romney. All I'm saying is there is a curious lack of interest in a very politically powerful, active Mormon and I think it's because he's a Democrat. Even if I disagreed with Reid's politics, I would still attend the forum because it isn't every day that the Senate Majority Leader comes and speaks at your university. I will be extremely interested to know the attendence for when Chief Justice John Roberts pays a visit. When I was at BYU and Sandra Day O'Connor spoke, everywhere (the Marriott Center, the JSB auditorium, Kimball Tower) was packed.

I guess I'm trying to say that the issue at stake here is respect for elected leaders even if they are of an opposing political persuasion. This was my same beef with NPR.

If my brother is right and the Deseret News is wrong, then Gary Cornia is also right: The Deseret News is a conservative washing machine stuck on spin. (Well, those aren't Gary's exact words, but he is known to be a raging Tribunist)

Just yesterday, mom was saying (with disdain, I might add) that the ONLY person she knew who took the trib was Gary. So if people like mom, who is nice, avoid the Salt Lake tribune, which is NOT the New York Times in left-wingedness, then I'm sure not nice, more judgmental people stayed away from Reid in droves!! It's almost like they're afraid that if they listen, they might actually like or (gasp) AGREE with something a (get your torch) a democrat is saying...
