All hail John Kelly for the "Silent Running" shout out in today's column. Man, I thought that my dad and I were the only two people on this earth that still remembered that movie. Anywho, it got me to thinking of the top three Bruce Dern movies of all time. So, here they are...
1) The Great Gatsby as Tom Buchanan. The only YouTube clip available is him being his unenlightened, rich, arrogant self. And you have to get through the opening bit with a young Jack McCoy (before he was the NYC DA).
2) The Burbs as Mr. Rumsfield, the Vietnam vet. (The Burbs is also Tom Hanks at his best. That's right, his best. Not just comedic performance, but of all time.)
3) Silent Running as crazy ol' Freeman Lowell. This whole clip is full of some great eco-speechifying (and a Joan Baez song).

There's another Dern movie you haven't mentioned here. Have you seen "The Cowboys" with John Wayne? Dern's absolutely slimey in it! It's great stuff.
I've never seen that one. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen a John Wayne western. I swear the only movie I've seen him in is The Longest Day.
