I met an Indie Snob

Oh man, I talked to someone in line while waiting in line for BSP (which I never do) and it was a disaster. I should have known from the umbrella and the chin strap beard what I was getting into: An Indie Battle Royale. References to the 9:30 club, the AFI Silver Theater in Silver Spring, and the fact that a new Fillmore was opening in Silver Spring across from the AFI Silver Theater to make Silver Spring the hipsterist place on Plant Earth. He asked what part of the main act I was most looking forward to. (I said the crazy ending, which wasn't very hipster). But the best was this conversation.
"I saw Xiu Xiu the other month. Do you know them?"
"Yeah, my buddy sent me some of their stuff. I don't like them."
"Well, that's what I thought to when I first listened to them. But then I listened to them over and over and over again and I learned to appreciate how great they are. They have crafted their own unique musical style. Truly incredible."
"Yeah, I don't like them."

If I was on an anthropological expedition (name the movie: "What if someone asks us what we're doing?" "Well, we can just tell them we're on an anthropological expedition." "NAH! We just tell 'em to hit the road or we'll beat their brains in!
"), and I wanted to ID an indie snob, I would look for a person A) Referencing an obscure band, B) touting said band as the best thing ever, and C) explaining that said band is so great that only the most discerning critic realizes it.

I really thought that he was going to say he was a writer for Pitchfork, because he sounded like a Pitchfork Review. He then asked me if I had heard about In 'n Out, you know, the burger place. Poor snob.

My buddy Andrew just sat there laughing, because the conversation was completely inane to him, a regular human. And I realized that maybe I should get back to that point.

I have to say, I felt like the lady on the subway who talks to Elaine on Seinfeld..."I don't talk to anyone on the subway for twenty years, and when I do she's going to a lesbian wedding."

Dude! Xiu Xiu is coming to Sonar on Aug 25. We should go and see if we can find chinstrap bearded know-it-all man and find an even more obscure, critically hailed band to stump him with.
