The latest step in nerd empowerment

As if MD couldn't get any weirder...

The chatter around this story is about whether the Hopkins student is going to get charged by the Baltimore police. I think the more appropriate discussion should be about what this means for nerd empowerment. Personally, I believe it's a huge step forward. Consider. Since 1994, we have seen an evolution in music where Weezer made pseudo-nerd music popular (honestly, Weezer is not nerd music, no matter how much music magazines try to tell you they are; the proof is in Rivers's lyrics about being a nerd and a loser, a topic that real nerds wouldn't bother singing about) and Death Cab and the Decemberists made real nerd music popular (Ben Gibbard mentioned that he would see the type of people at his concerts that used to beat him up in high school), an evolution in fashion where nerd glasses are now cool and hip, an evolution in popular movies where nerds are the great tastemakers, commanding huge attention at Comic-con and making or breaking movies based on their initial reviews about the integrity of the work. Bill Gates long has said you should be nice to nerds as they will most likely be your boss.

With this back drop, we have a doughy dungeon master who hears a noise in the garage. He has been victimized before, but no more! He takes his replica ninja sword off the wall, steels his nerves, and walks outside. A shadow rushing at him. All that D+D training, all those awesome recreated Star Wars videos, all has led to this moment. And I'll be darned if he didn't role a 18, 19, or 20 on his twenty-sided die and score a critical hit with the katana!
