Of all the Chinese movies I've seen...

I beautifully killed our Netflix queue by getting Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and House of Flying Daggers one after the other and Christina had no real interest in seeing either. This, combined with working late many nights the last two weeks has meant that House of Flying Daggers has been marinating next to the TV for a while now.

For no good reason it turns out, because it's awesome. I know everyone gushes over Crouching Tiger, but of the three Chinese movies that I've seen in this vein, I much prefer House of Flying Daggers and Hero. I absolutely loved the battle sequences in this one and the ending was dramatic and epic. I do really like the mythical feel of these movies, but this one seemed a little more grounded than the other two (not too much flying, but a sudden snowstorm and impressively thrown daggers were some of the fantastical elements). I also loved the cinematography, but that may because I don't watch too many artistic movies any more so when something is visually appealing, I am stunned. Man, I still need to see CTHD. For a Chinese movie Christina may enjoy, try "The Road Home" (1999).

My wife and I both agree--- House of Flying Daggers is great. But what you really should see is A World Without Thieves. It is available on Netflix. It's not a kung fu movie, but it has that feel, and plot line and character development are both good.
